Dyslexia is a condition which affects about 1 in 10 people in the UK and is often called a ‘specific learning difficulty’.
Dyslexia is often inherited so that several generations of a family may have dyslexia. It varies from person to person so there is no ‘typical’ dyslexic. Some people have difficulties with spelling but are wonderful at designing complex buildings. Other people may have problems with remembering spoken instructions but can write computer software with ease.
There is no medical test to check whether someone has dyslexia. This can make it hard to recognise and diagnose and it means there is no ‘cure’. There is, however, a huge number of ways in which dyslexics and the people around them can make best use of the many skills that dyslexics have. Rather than seeing dyslexia as a difficulty, we like to see it as an opportunity.
We believe that every dyslexic person is unique. This means that everyone with dyslexia needs to understand their own needs and find strategies for dealing with every day things that they find difficult, such as spelling or time keeping.
We believe that everyone with dyslexia has the potential to use their dyslexic strengths to succeed in work, learning and life. To support you to do this we can –
